The “Pearly White” sneaker is a conceptual footwear design project rooted in Zen philosophies such as fukinsei (asymmetry) and kintsugi (the appreciation of imperfection), which are used to challenge rigid consumer standards around perfection, cleanliness, and uniformity. The sneaker’s name references the common phrase “show those pearly whites,” often used to encourage people to smile with perfect, white teeth.
This sneaker is deliberately “imperfect” (as much as mass manufacturing could allow), featuring asymmetrical lacing and a mud-splattered upper that suggests wear, individuality, and impermanence. The use of Pinatex, a sustainable textile made from pineapple leaf fiber, underscores a commitment to eco-conscious design and highlights the importance of supporting material innovation in the fashion industry.
